Learn Maths and Physics from an engineer with over 20 years of real-world experience.

Subjects

Hi, I’m James. I have a First Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering and a Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Physics Education with Distinction from Edinburgh Napier University.

I spent over 20 years working as an engineer, including 15 years in the Royal Navy as a Weapons Engineer and later as a Senior Systems Engineer at BAE Systems. Throughout my career, I applied Maths and Physics to solve real engineering problems, giving me real-world experience that I now bring into my tutoring.

After more than 20 years in engineering, I wanted to use my experience to help develop the next generation. Alongside tutoring, I now work at BAE Systems as an Early Careers & Skills Development Coach, supporting apprentices and graduates as they begin their engineering careers.

I help students achieve the best grades they’re capable of in Maths and Physics by helping them develop a genuine understanding of the subject. By identifying gaps in their knowledge and breaking complex concepts down into simple, manageable steps, I help students build confidence and become more independent learners.

At Central Tutors, I support students studying SQA National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Maths and Physics, tailoring lessons to the course requirements and the needs of each learner.

For me, tutoring isn’t just about helping students pass exams. It’s about giving them the confidence and problem-solving skills they can take into further education, apprenticeships and their future careers.

Here’s how we ensure you’re in safe hands:

My experience combines one-to-one tutoring, teacher training and more than 20 years of coaching, mentoring and developing others throughout my engineering career.

As part of my Postgraduate Certificate in Secondary Physics Education, I planned and delivered Physics lessons in Scottish secondary schools, adapting my teaching to meet the needs of individual students and drawing on evidence-informed teaching approaches.

Alongside this, I provide one-to-one online Maths and Physics tuition, helping students build confidence, strengthen their understanding and prepare for assessments and exams.

Throughout my later career in the Royal Navy, I coached and mentored junior engineers from entry level through to promotion, helping them develop the technical knowledge, confidence and professional skills needed to progress. I continue to support the development of future engineers through my role at BAE Systems.

Whether I’m working with school pupils, apprentices or graduates, I enjoy breaking complex ideas down into simple, understandable steps and helping people reach their full potential.

My approach to tutoring is built around helping students develop a genuine understanding of Maths and Physics, rather than simply memorising methods. I break complex topics down into small, manageable steps and use clear explanations, worked examples and guided practice before gradually helping students become confident independent learners.

Every lesson is tailored to the individual student. I regularly use questioning and short retrieval activities to identify gaps in understanding, check progress and build long-term confidence in the subject. Lessons are interactive, with plenty of opportunities for students to think through problems, ask questions and apply what they have learned.

I set high expectations while creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them. My aim is not only to improve exam performance but also to develop the confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills that students can carry into further education and their future careers.
