I am an experienced Maths and Physics tutor with a BSc in Applied Physics, 29 years of experience working as an engineer in the semiconductor industry and 18 years of secondary teaching experience.

During my teaching career, I taught Physics, Science and Mathematics to students with a wide range of abilities and supported pupils preparing for SQA National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications.

My aim is to make difficult ideas easier to understand and to help students develop the confidence to apply what they know. I do not believe in simply teaching students to memorise answers. Instead, I work with them to understand the underlying concepts and then show them how to use that knowledge to solve problems and tackle exam questions effectively.

Lessons are tailored to each student’s individual needs. This may mean working through difficult areas of the syllabus, strengthening core knowledge, developing problem-solving skills, preparing for examinations or improving exam technique.

My engineering career also allows me to show students how the Physics and Mathematics they study are applied in the real world, particularly in electronics, semiconductor technology and engineering. I believe this connection between theory and practical application can make STEM subjects more interesting and meaningful.

Having recently retired from teaching, I am now able to focus on using my experience to help students achieve their potential in Maths and Physics in a supportive, friendly and encouraging environment.

Here’s how we ensure you’re in safe hands:

I am an experienced Maths and Physics tutor with a BSc in Applied Physics, 29 years of experience as an engineer in the semiconductor industry and 18 years of secondary teaching experience.
During my teaching career, I taught Physics, Science and Mathematics to students with a wide range of abilities. I have experience helping students overcome difficult areas of the syllabus, strengthen their understanding, develop problem-solving skills and prepare effectively for examinations.
As a GTC-registered teacher in Physics and Mathematics, I bring both professional teaching experience and a strong technical background to my tutoring.
I have supported students preparing for SQA National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Maths and Physics, helping them develop both subject knowledge and confidence.
My engineering career provides an additional perspective that can help students see how the Maths and Physics they learn in the classroom are applied in the real world. In particular, my experience in electronics, semiconductor technology and engineering allows me to bring practical examples into lessons.
Having recently retired from teaching, I am now able to focus on using my experience to help students achieve their potential in Maths and Physics.

My aim is to make difficult ideas easier to understand and to help students develop the confidence to apply what they know.
I don’t believe that simply memorising answers is the best way to learn. Instead, I work with students to understand the underlying concepts, then show them how to apply that understanding to solve problems and tackle exam questions effectively.
Every student is different, so lessons are tailored to their individual needs. Depending on the student, this might involve:

– working through challenging areas of the syllabus
– building a stronger understanding of fundamental concepts
– developing mathematical and problem-solving skills
– preparing for SQA examinations
– improving exam technique and confidence
– practising unfamiliar problems
– addressing gaps in knowledge
– building confidence in subjects the student currently finds difficult

I aim to create a supportive, friendly and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and working through problems at their own pace.
Ultimately, my goal is not simply to help a student get the right answer. It is to help them understand why the answer is right and give them the skills and confidence to work things out for themselves.
