I’m Tobit, a dedicated maths tutor in Edinburgh and a third-year Mathematics student at the University of Edinburgh. Having studied in Edinburgh myself, I understand the Scottish school system and the structure of SQA exams from National 5 to Advanced Higher.

I specialise in teaching Mathematics up to Advanced Higher, and I enjoy helping students build confidence and improve their grades. My teaching style is relaxed, clear and supportive. I want students to see that maths can be enjoyable, logical and rewarding.

My university studies give me a strong understanding of the topics taught in school. I help students learn not only how to use a method, but also why it works. This makes the subject easier to understand and helps learning stick.

I tailor every lesson to the individual. Some students want to catch up, while others want to push for top grades. My aim is to give each learner a structured plan that works for them. As an enthusiastic Edinburgh maths tutor, I enjoy supporting students through challenges and helping them reach their full potential.

I’m experienced in teaching in an engaging, comprehensible way, in both one-to-one and group settings, and working with children and adults of various abilities and ages. My first experience of tutoring was during my final year of school, where I volunteered as a teaching assistant in a second-year maths class. I enjoyed helping students who found the subject intimidating, answering their questions and giving constructive feedback. I encouraged them to explore and have fun with mathematical concepts. This inspired me to continue my journey into teaching. Now at Central Tutors, I enjoy the challenge of one-to-one tutoring and working together with students to refine their skills and build confidence to reach their goals – whatever they may be.

  • Tutoring Approach

I will work with each individual to find what teaching methods work best for them and establish a plan to reach their goals. I like to encourage students to ask as many questions as they need and be curious – not only about “How?” but also the “Why?”. This is the key to truly understanding mathematics and also finding more enjoyment in it. With plenty of exam experience, I assist students on study techniques and exam strategy alongside the raw syllabus content. I work over Zoom, using an online whiteboard to see what the student is writing and also write explanations and notes during the lesson which I share for future reference. Occasionally, I will direct students to additional resources such as past papers, YouTube videos and online notes/worksheets that they can have a look at over the week. I introduce a new topic by explaining the theory, showing examples and then working together on exercises with increasing complexity. Once familiar with a topic, I’ll often show a past exam question and after the student attempts it, we go over the marking scheme together.
